I just read the article, Connecting Students to Culturally Relevant Texts by Yvonne Freeman and David Freeman and had to share these resources with you.
The article includes a rubric idea and lists a ton of books (that I've included below) that should be in our classroom libraries.
Rubric Questions:
1. Are the characters in the story like you and your family?
2. Have you ever had an experience like one described in the story?
3. Have you lived in or visited places like those in the story?
4. Could this story take place this year?
5. Have close do you think the main characters are to you in age?
6. Are the main characters in the story boys or girls?
7. Do the characters talk like you and your family do?
8. How often do you read stories like these?
