Mindfulness Corner
I've posted a new Donor's Choose Project recently for a Mindfulness Corner. Sonic has so generously donated $200 to this project, but we have a ways to go. I'd really appreciate your taking the time to read more about it, share with friends and family, and perhaps donating. Every dollar counts! This would bring a space into our classroom that would allow kiddos to self regulate. Sometimes we just need to take a break in order to keep going. This space would give students a place to read quietly, draw pictures, color mandalas, play with some fidgets, or just take a breath. I don't want this to be a punitive space. I want for students to ask to go to the corner when they feel like they need a break. I'm actually going to be working on a Google Doc QR code request sheet that they would need to fill out prior to using this space just to give me some more information on why he/she feels they need to use this space. I'll share that as a freebie once completed. What do you do to help your kiddos self regulate? I'd love to hear and see your ideas. Please comment below or use hashtag #mindfulnessclassroomcorner!

Culturally Relevant Texts
I just read the article, Connecting Students to Culturally Relevant Texts by Yvonne Freeman and David Freeman and had to share these resources with you.
The article includes a rubric idea and lists a ton of books (that I've included below) that should be in our classroom libraries.
Rubric Questions:
1. Are the characters in the story like you and your family?
2. Have you ever had an experience like one described in the story?
3. Have you lived in or visited places like those in the story?
4. Could this story take place this year?
5. Have close do you think the main characters are to you in age?
6. Are the main characters in the story boys or girls?
7. Do the characters talk like you and your family do?
8. How often do you read stories like these?
I've also included some matching activities from Teachers Pay Teachers. You can click on those pictures to purchase and download.
Cinderella stories from around the world...
Visit Cinco Puntos for more folktales, Native American stories, Chicano literature, and more.
Some others that I use in my classroom that weren't mentioned in the article...
